Step 5: Character Creation & MCMs

Character Creation

Character Customization Mods

Living Skyrim offers a wide array of customization options – from hair to tattoos and eyes. Use the included mods to perfect your character’s look.

Living Skyrim includes the High Poly Head mod for higher facial detail. To use the High Poly Head mod for your character, set the “Face part” to option 3 in RaceMenu. Note that using High Poly Head may require you to do some manual face sculpting to avoid clipping or other weirdness.

MCM Configuration

Caution

The following steps should be completed in the order presented. Don't skip ahead. Some patience is required while the MCM Recording runs.

Mandatory Control and MCM Settings

  1. After finishing character creation, you'll be notified that the LS5 MCM Recording is about to run, which will configure most of the MCMs for you.
  2. While the MCM Recording is running, you may see some popups occasionally. This is normal, just read them and click "Ok" or "Yes" when prompted.
  3. It's best if you stay still while the MCM Recording is running. You can wander around and explore the starting area a bit, but otherwise do not leave the starting area until the recording is finished running.
  4. The MCM Recording will alert you when it's finished.
  5. Once the MCM Recording is finished, save your game, then immediately load that save. This ensures that all the mods initialize properly.

Adjusting Keybind Conflicts

MCM Recorder cannot correctly set hotkeys, so the following keys need to be changed in the MCM:

  • Take Notes: Set ‘Open Journal’ to the ‘B’ key.
  • SmoothCam: Go to thirdperson and set 'Shoulder Swap' to 'N' key.
  • Dual Wield Block: Set the hotkey to 'V'

A Word About Difficulty

By default, Living Skyrim uses Adept difficulty. However, this doesn't matter because of Simply Balanced, which allows you to tweak the difficulty to your liking via its MCM. If you're unsure what settings to change, you can optionally run one of the "Difficulty" MCM Recordings which are presets created by the Living Skyrim team to make the game easier or harder.

Additionally, Living Skyrim 5 includes Palladium Racials, which includes a number of tweaks that can be turned on and off during the MCM setup process. Make sure to read the prompts carefully and pick your choice for each one. They can make the game significantly harder or easier depending on your choices.
