Important Mods

The mods below are some of the systems and content that most define how Zenithar's Forge plays. This is a curated set of highlights, not the full load order — for the complete, always up-to-date list of every mod in the list (with links), see the Load Order Library.

Info

Zenithar's Forge plays very differently from standard Skyrim. If you only read one page before you start, make it Getting Started.

The Survival Experience

This is the heart of the list, and the reason losing is fun. YASH - Yet Another Skyrim Hardcore reworks Skyrim into an unforgiving world where you are not special, paired with the Survival Mode Creation Club content for hunger, cold, and fatigue. Last Seed and The Frozen North deepen the needs and cold-survival systems, while Campfire (with Cuyi's Campfire Backpacks) lets you make camp out in the wilds. Synergy - Skills and Perks Reimagined is the perk overhaul that gates skill experience behind your perk choices, so you genuinely grow into a capable adventurer rather than starting as one. Wounds makes every fight dangerous with lasting injuries, and Carry That Weight turns inventory management into a real consideration. One quirk you'll notice immediately: your game only saves when you sleep, via Simple Save on Sleep.

Making a Living

Before you can adventure, you have to eat — and that means honest work. Gourmet and Brewer let you cook and brew for profit; Merchant lets you trade goods between settlements (with NPC Bartering for trading with almost anyone); Hunterborn turns hunting and butchering into a full profession; and Andrealphus' Jobs Overhaul lets you take paid work from NPCs. Round it out with Tavern Games for a gamble, True Thane for the perks of nobility, Heim - Immersive Smelting and Not All Ores Are Created Equal for smithing, Zim's Trainers Expansion and Temper and Recharge Services for paid services, Storage for Rent and Rent a room for 12 hours for lodging, and C.O.I.N. and Google's Imperial Bank for a smarter economy.

Magic Reimagined

Magic is rebuilt from the ground up. Mysticism - A Magic Overhaul is the foundation, with Sorcerer - A Staff and Scroll Overhaul and Zero Magicka Overhaul meaning you start with almost no power and lean on staves and scrolls. Spell Research and Spell Learning Restriction make spells something you study and earn rather than buy, and Apoapse's Arcana lets you craft and learn spells through experimentation. Curse of the Firmament rounds out the arcane options.

Combat & Enemies

Combat is deadly and deliberate. Blade and Blunt - A Combat Overhaul and True Directional Movement modernize the feel, TK Dodge RE gives you a dodge, and Complete Archery Overhaul RELOADED with Archery Locational Damage makes ranged combat matter. On the other side of the blade, Enhanced Enemy AI, Massively buffed Dragon Priests, and Taunt Your Enemies ensure your foes are nothing to take lightly.

A Living, Reactive World

Skyrim notices what you do. Realistic AI Detection (RAID) overhauls stealth, while Better Stealing, Suspicious City Guards, and Lockpicks Are Illicit make crime risky. Simple Degradation wears down your gear, Immersive Speechcraft and Sensible Bribes expand social play, and Disable Fast Travel paired with the Carriage and Ferry Travel Overhaul keeps your journeys grounded. Smaller touches like Dirt and Blood, People are Strangers, Take a Seat, Take a Peek, Use Those Blankets, and Remote Interactions round out the immersion.

Quests & Characters

There's plenty to do beyond surviving. A large set of Quest Expansion mods deepen vanilla questlines — including Headhunter - Bounties Redone, Paarthurnax - Quest Expansion, The Whispering Door, The Innocence Lost, The Heart of Dibella, Caught Red Handed, and College Days - Winterhold. The world feels far more alive thanks to a wide collection of Lines Expansion mods (Bandit, Brawl, Dremora, Civil War, Forsworn & Thalmor, Vampire), More to Say, Immersive Rejections, and a stack of Follower Dialogue Expansion mods. NPCs themselves are overhauled by Modpocalypse NPCs, Courageous Women of Skyrim, and Pride of Skyrim.

A Reforged Skyrim

The cities and towns have been rebuilt with care. Highlights include Capital Whiterun Expansion and Capital Windhelm Expansion, the JK's series (Whiterun, Windhelm, Markarth, Riften and more), the Cities of the North overhauls (Winterhold, Falkreath, Dawnstar), and The Great Cities / Towns / Villages collection. Add RedBag's Solitude, Riften of Reverie, Ultimate Markarth, Obscure's College of Winterhold, Northfire's Windhelm, and Solstheim touch-ups like Quaint Raven Rock and Better Tel Mithryn, and the whole province feels handcrafted.

Sights & Sounds

Zenithar's Forge is a striking list. Visuals are anchored by Rudy ENB for Cathedral Weathers, Cathedral Weathers and Seasons, and the Lux / Lux Orbis / Lux Via lighting suite, with Embers XD for gorgeous fire. The landscape is overhauled by Majestic Mountains, Northfire's Photoreal Mountains, Happy Little Trees, and the Veydosebrom / Folkvangr grass mods, all sitting on Skyrim HD textures, Static Mesh Improvement Mod, and Water for ENB under an Ethereal Cosmos sky. The soundscape is just as considered, with Immersive Sounds - Compendium, Audio Overhaul for Skyrim, and an extensive fan-made music selection (Nyghtfall, Musical Lore, The Northerner Diaries, and more).

Animations & Interface

Movement and menus are modernized throughout. Animations come from the Vanargand, Leviathan, and Goetia sets covering melee, archery, and magic, plus EVG Conditional Idles, EVG Animated Traversal, SkyClimb, and SmoothCam for the camera. The interface is built on SkyUI with SkyUI AIO Survival (SAS), Untarnished UI, TrueHUD, moreHUD, Quick Loot RE, RaceMenu, and Dear Diary Dark Mode.
